Beginner

Beginner is a character class in MapleStory. All new players who are in the category of Explorer start the game as Beginners on Maple Island. At level 8 or 10 (depends on which job you take), Beginners may make the first job advancement and become either a Warrior, Magician, Archer, Rogue, or a Pirate. The game recommends beginners to make the advancement to a magician at Level 8, and Level 10 for the other first job advancements.

Though Beginners are not considered one of the "main" character classes, some people choose to remain as a Beginner past the first, second, or even third job advancements. They do this for a variety of reasons, the main one being that it is a challenge to take a Beginner that far.

Perma-Beginners

Permanent Beginners, also known as perma-beginners, are Beginners who choose not to make a job advancement.

They get several perks, including cheaper taxi rides, no EXP-loss upon death, and plenty of respect. However, disadvantages to being a perma-beginner include having less HP and MP (Health and Mana Points), lack of skills, and very limited access to equipment. Their build is similar to that of a Warrior's so they rely mostly on melee weapons, but they will also never hit as high as most warriors. It is hard to level up as a perma-beginner since a majority of quests are job-restricted, and it is harder to take down most monsters than other characters.

Nonetheless, plenty of players are proud to be Beginners.

Islanders

Islanders are a special "class" of beginners, that spend the majority of their lives residing on Maple Island. These characters not only choose not to job advance, but they also choose not to leave the island. As such, it is even harder for these characters to level. Quests are few, and they must rely on seasonal events to gain new equipment and exp. They must also be able to count on their friends to send them equipment, items, and other materials. Monster variety is VERY limited; the highest level monsters they can fight are Pigs and Orange Mushrooms. Most Islanders quit at level 20-ish.

It's even tougher being a Coco Islander. Coco Islanders are like Islanders only they are even harder to handle and specifically for Cannoneers. NOBODY can reach them except another Coco Islander or a friend and they rely on events to give them chlothes and a rare weapon drop or thye cash shop."Floppy Starfish" are one of the only monsters a Coco Islander can fight.

Description

Warriors are a part of Explorer, they use tough melee attacks. They deliver attacks with brutal efficiency and raw strength. Warriors have the highest base HP and the lowest base MP of any class. They belong at the front of a party so they can bring their powerful weapons into battle. A Warrior can wield the widest variety of weapons in the game, from swords and axes to spears and blunt weapons. The Warrior class branches off into three directions depending on what weapon they choose to specialize in.

Magicians are a part of the Explorers, they make use of magic, unlike the physical-attacking classes. Although they are physically weak and have low HP, magicians are one of the most supportive, popular, and highly recommended classes to take in MapleStory. They are highly respected, and are valuable for Party Quests, Boss Fights, hunting, etc. Magicians have extremely powerful Mobbing Skills as well as useful support skills.

Bowmen, also known as Archers, are a part of Explorers and are the characters that wield Bows and Crossbows. They use long-range attacks and are capable dealing splash damage. They also have the highest accuracy, thus granting them the ability to fight Bosses earlier then the other classes. However, they are one of the classes that have the lowest HP, causing them to wash hp or bloodmastering to gain more HP.

Rogue are a part of Explorers, they are short-medium range characters mostly using daggers, claws and throwing stars. They are the fastest short range attackers in the game, dealing weak yet many attacks on a foe. They use their natural quickness and agility to navigate the area, trying to gain the upper hand. Generally, Thieves have the highest avoidability and second highest accuracy in MapleStory. Playing them is also quite expensive, especially Assassins that are required to continuously re-charge stars.

Pirates are a part of Explorers. The Pirates use Guns, which vary at speed every 5 levels, and Knuckles as their main weapons. Although using the gun gets relatively low hits, the higher hits are more consistent at monster close to the Pirate's level with the skill Bullet Time. They do bad damage at first, but will get better each time.

Description

Dual Blade is a separate Rogue Explorer Class, similar to the Cannoneer, and he has two weapons, katara and dagger to battle.

Story

The Dark Lord. It’s an unfortunate name, for it brings up images of evil and fear. Yet the one who bears that title does so not because he is evil, but because he spends so much time in the dark, battling against the things that would bring Maple World down. It’s a high and lonely destiny, one borne well by all those who have carried the title.

The former Dark Lord was a great man who spent his life fighting against the forces of darkness. As all Dark Lords must, he had carefully groomed possible successors. His two greatest students were a young man named Jin and his own daughter, who is known to us now only as ‘Lady Syl.’ Both were excellent students, people of great strength and moral character and he cherished and loved both of them. In turn, Lady Syl and Jin revered their teacher and developed a great affection for each other. Times were happy as they all trained and worked together.

The trouble began with an urgent request from Tristan, the Dark Lord’s friend. It seemed that Balrog had been resurrected and was destroying Victoria Island. The Dark Lord immediately headed out to help but when he arrived in Sleepywood, his friend Tristan was nowhere to be found. He eventually tracked down Balrog and faced him in mortal combat. Alas, Balrog is a foe not so easily beaten for his evil is not merely physical, but spiritual as well. The Dark Lord lost his focus for a split second and allowed Balrog’s evil to slip past his shields – and he lost his soul. The Dark Lord had become one of the very monsters he had spent his life defeating and began attacking Kerning City.

Jin, who had followed his master against his wishes, witnessed everything. In despair and agony, he tried to appeal to the thing that was his former master, trying to get it to remember the man of virtue and honor he once was. Alas, it was no use! Jin knew what he would have to do, what his true master would have wanted and he defeated the monster that wore his master’s beloved face. Tears stinging his eyes, Jin carried the body back home to bury him in honor and succeed him as Dark Lord.

As it happened, Balrog claimed two victims that day. Lady Syl, her mind and soul shattered by the loss of her beloved father, blamed Jin for not protecting him. In time she came to believe that Jin had even engineered her father’s death in order to take his position as Dark Lord. Nothing Jin could say or do could convince her that she was mistaken, that he would have given anything to save her father’s life and that he never wanted to become Dark Lord in this way. It did not work. Lady Syl’s heart grew cold and bitter, hating the man she had loved with a cold fury that was like a wall of ice between them.

The last time they saw one another, Jin made one last entreaty to Lady Syl, begging her to remember her father’s honor and greatness and the love they had once shared. Lady Syl merely promised him that when the end came, his death would rival her father’s in pain and anguish.

Now there is a secret war raging in the heart of Kerning City. Lady Syl and her Dual Blades continue her struggle against the Dark Lord from an unknown location simply known as the ‘Secret Garden.’ Her new organization is growing in strength and more and more skillful Rogues are disappearing. The Dark Lord knows that Lady Syl is getting ready to make her move, though he does not yet know what that move will be.

Meanwhile, a man named Ryden in a back alley of Kerning City begins talking to travelers here and there, making an interesting offer.

At the Secret Garden, Lady Syl takes care of her plants, gathers her forces and nurses her ever-growing rage and bitterness towards the Dark Lord.

Yet in the silence of her empty heart, a tiny ember of something she’d long thought extinguished remains. Whether it can burst into flame before she and the Dark Lord destroy one another, no one knows.

Description

Cannoneer is a separate Pirate Explorer Class, similar to the Dual Blade, and he has a monkey companion for battle.

Story

The Cannoneer was just a regular Beginner who was sailing on a ship to Maple Island and follow the process of the Beginner steps, until a Jr. Balrog appeared and started attacking the boat. The Cannoneer were unable to fight back, and eventually the Jr. Balrog knocked the Cannoneer far into the water where he nearly drowned. Fortunately, a monkey saved him and brought him to Coco Island.

After getting acquainted with the monkey, the Cannoneer meets Cutter, a Pirate and weapons designer who worked for the Nautilus and had created a Cannon, however during a test run and his ship accidentally ran into a rock and he found himself on the Island. The Cannoneer then searches out for food and comes across an ignition device to work the massive cannon that can launch them back to Nautilus Harbor. The Cannoneer along with the monkey are then recruited by the Pirates.
